Shipping KPI monthly news - February 2020

Overview

What are meta data used for?

How would you define a ship?

By the tonnage or dimensions? Perhaps by the type or trading area?

Meta data are applied to define the ship with 18 different data points. Some are static – e.g. building year and country, while other are changing more frequently – e.g. the P&I club. Other yet again can be impossible to define – e.g. the trading area.

While the meta data has no impact on the KPI and eventually SPI, they provide excellent filters. Perhaps you would consider your P&I contract, if there is correlation between the technical performance of vessels with another club. Perhaps should the crew composition be considered if there are significantly more navigational deficiencies with your current composition.

It’s easy to define how you want to filter your data. In the Benchmark section of the webpage the fleet criteria come with preselected filters, including:

  • Trading area
  • Senior officer nationality
  • Flag

To add another filter simply select from the drop-down menu in the lower left corner of the fleet criteria window.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
