BIMCO partner in new maritime security website

Overview

BIMCO has launched a new website with maritime security guidance to companies and mariners together with other international shipping industry organisations.

The site, launched today, (www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org) provides security-related guidance produced by the industry as well as links to other useful maritime and military security resources.

The launch will be followed by a new version of the book Ship Masters Security Manual in September.

The website is meant as a basic resource for companies and organisations on maritime security matters. It is free of use and does not require registration.

BIMCO’s own security website section will continue to have restricted information, such as EUNAVFOR’s and Combined Maritime Forces’ Industry Releasable Threat Assessments (IRTA) and Industry Releasable Threat Bulletins (IRTB). For security reasons, such information cannot be made available in a publicly accessible website.

In addition to various guidance on migrants, stowaways, smuggling etc. which has been in force for a while, the website includes newly updated best practice guides to help companies and mariners risk assess voyages and mitigate against piracy and other types of hostile acts. These are covered in three publications:

  • Global Counter Piracy Guidance for Companies, Masters and Seafarers, which is a new publication containing guidance on piracy and armed robbery that can be used by mariners around the world.
  • BMP5: Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Safety in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, which contains guidance especially for the region in question.
  • For the Gulf of guinea, the third edition of the Guidelines for Owners, Operators and Masters for protection against piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea region is also provided.

For questions related to the guidance or the information in the website, members can contact BIMCO’s Security Department via email to security@bimco.org or via phone +45 4436 6844.

The other organisations involved in the website are: ICS, IFSMA, IG P&I Clubs, Intercargo, Intermanager, INTERTANKO and OCIMF
