BIMCO and Fairplay launch survey to highlight Cyber Security

Overview

BIMCO and Fairplay are encouraging members to participate in a survey that will result in greater awareness on how the industry prepares for and handles cyber attacks.

As some of the industry’s most well-known players have fallen victim of cyber attacks – including Maersk Line and Clarkson – insight into the maritime industry’s digital protection is becoming increasingly important.

“The survey allows us to gather knowledge about cyber risks and attacks that would normally never be reported,” says BIMCO’s Head of Maritime Technology and Regulation, Aron Frank Sorensen.

It is the third time that the two organisations join forces to launch the annual Maritime Cyber Security Survey. Last year’s survey showed that the cyber security threat is growing and that a wide range of companies today experience regular breaches. Not only the industry’s biggest players are at risk.

“The quality of the survey’s result greatly depends on the number of respondents. Therefore, we encourage all BIMCO members to participate and help the sector take the issue seriously. Based on the result, we can estimate whether it is necessary to add guidance to the industry Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships. That could be if the attack methods are changing,” Aron Frank Sorensen says.

This year’s survey focuses on the measures undertaken by companies to prepare themselves for the increasing cyber risks as well as plans for recovery in case of a breach.

The anonymous survey will run from early June to mid-August and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. The results of the survey will be published in Fairplay and on fairplay.ihs.com in September 2018 and will also be reflected in the other IHS Markit maritime titles.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
