Precautionary advice for ships in the vicinity of Southern Red Sea

Overview

BIMCO would like to remind all members of the need to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activity to UKMTO when transitting through the southern Red Sea in the area of Bab el Mandeb.

The attached information reported from MSCHOA and EUNAVFOR reflect recent incidents in that area.

Members should conduct individual voyage risk assessments and consider the following:

  • to prevent misidentification, continue to transmit AIS information
  • to undertake daylight transits where possible and realistic - as they may also help prevent misidentification - but night transits are no more or less risky
  • to keep a very close lookout for suspicious activity
  • register as required by the industry BMP
  • comply in full with the BMP and
  • where possible keep as far away from the coast of Yemen as navigationally possible while complying with the relevant Traffic Separation Scheme.
