IMO preparation for an initial strategy on reduction of GHG from ships.

Overview

BIMCO participated in the second workshop at IMO for the preparation of the initial strategy on reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships last week in London.

The Intersessional Working Group on reductions of GHG emissions from ships met for its second meeting from 23 to 27 October 2017 to continue the work that was initiated at MEPC 70 in 2016.

While the first group meeting established trust and the basis for discussions during MEPC 71, their prime task was to develop a draft text of the initial IMO GHG strategy. The initial IMO GHG strategy was approved at MEPC 72 in April 2017.

The group discussed the vision for the strategy, as well as the levels of ambition and the guiding principles but without coming to any agreed text proposals. However, the group narrowed down the options to a few different draft text proposals, in what is called “squared brackets text”. The final text consideration on the draft proposal is intended to be finalised at the next and third session. The outcome of the meeting was as expected, bearing in mind it’s a very difficult process to bridge views from different nations on this very complex climate issue. The work is in progress and will be ready for approval in April 2018.
