Indian holiday supplement available for the BIMCO calendar

Overview

With great appreciation to our contributing members, BIMCO is now able to issue the BIMCO Holiday Calendar 2021 Supplement.

The Indian subcontinent has an impressive cultural diversity, and its 1.4 billion inhabitants observe a variety of religions. These are among the reasons why the regulation of holidays is a matter delegated to the individual states, while the federal government has declared a limited three secular holidays to be observed universally by all Indian establishments.

In conjunction to the federal holidays, each state will declare their own holidays. The holiday schedules are usually divided in at least two parts:

  • Public holidays
  • Restricted holidays

The public holidays have a general appliance in the state, while the restricted holidays are conditional labour agreement holidays. Each employee is usually allowed to choose a limited number of restricted holidays to observe in agreement with the employer.

Due to the extensive and rather complicated public holiday system in India, it has been a longstanding tradition for the local chamber of commerce and industry to declare Charter Party holidays. This tradition provides contractual clarifications in terms of laytime computing.

To avoid disputes, we recommend that only “charter party holidays” will be excepted from the running of laytime, and that this point should be discussed and covered adequately in the charter party.

With gratitude to our contributing members in India, BIMCO has finalised the supplement containing information on the Indian Charter Party Holidays for 2020. The link can be found in the printed BIMCO Holiday Calendar in the Indian section on page 140.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
