A new virus "Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)" has been detected, causing serious outbreaks in China, Japan and Republic of Korea. WHO issues advice for international travel and trade.
A new virus has been identified by WHO working together with the Chinese authorities as a result of an outbreak of several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan City, Hubei province in China. This new virus has been temporarily named as "2019-nCoV" and belongs to the coronavirus family of viruses that includes common cold, and viruses like SARS and MERS. As this is a coronavirus, it can cause respiratory illnesses. Presently, confirmed cases of this virus have been reported not only in China but also in Thailand, Japan and the Republic of Korea. About 51 cases are reported to be in severely ill condition and 12 in critical condition. 6 deaths have been reported in Wuhan City.
While WHO and the Chinese authorities are monitoring and investigating the source, impact and treatment for people affected with this virus, precautionary WHO travel advice has been issued.
