Overview
BIMCO representatives will attend an IMO Sub-committee meeting to help assure a smooth exchange of information in the industry and avoid cases of duplicate entries of national Port Control inspection data.
The online database managing exchange of information, EQUASIS, is an extensive information system providing details obtained from both public and private sources on the performance of ships, maritime organizations and maritime transport companies.
The database helps promote exchange of information and transparency in the shipping industry, but the industry is concerned about some duplicate entries of national Port State Control (PSC) inspection data which have been identified.
Duplicate entries (and any incorrect entries) in databases of PSC information systems are a significant cause for concern for shipowners and can have serious consequences. Specifically, it can result in an entirely incorrect impression being given about the performance of an individual ship. This could then result in serious cumulative commercial consequences for its owner or operator.
The Management Unit of EQUASIS is currently investigating with data providers, the best possible way to include information on statutory certificates (such as International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate (IOPP), International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPP), International Ballast Water Management Certificate, etc.) in the system.
At the meeting, the recent developments concerning the EQUASIS information system will also be considered. The meeting (on Implementation of IMO Instruments (III) 5th session) will be held in London from 24 to 28 September 2018.
