New report on the state of maritime piracy in 2013

Overview

In line with previous years, BIMCO continue to work with Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) in their effort to uncover the economic and human costs of piracy. With this year’s report, “The State of Maritime Piracy 2013” BIMCO has once again been asked to audit the methodologies and calculations used in the report.

In line with previous years, BIMCO continues to work with Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP) in their effort to uncover the economic and human costs of piracy. With this year’s report, “The State of Maritime Piracy 2013” BIMCO has once again been asked to audit the methodologies and calculations used in the report.

It is BIMCO’s hope that this lesson learned is not forgotten but is taken forward by the international community when dealing with piracy problems elsewhere, where seafarers are regularly confronted with extremely cynical and often deadly attacks by local pirates and robbers.

The launch of this year’s report will take place at an event set to be hosted at The Army and Navy Club (The Rag) in London on Thursday May 8th 2014. During the event, a panel will discuss the findings of the report as well as trends and developments identified throughout 2013. The panel will be moderated by Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, Senior Fellow at OBP and the panelists include Jens Vestergaard Madsen who will represent the report, as well as Simon Church representing MSC-HOA/EUNAVFOR, BIMCO’s Chief Maritime Security Officer, Giles Noakes and BIMCO’s Chief Shipping Analyst, Peter Sand.

Highlights of this year’s report include:

  • Updated cost estimates on the employment of armed guards, military deployments, ransoms, insurance, defensive measures, and labor costs.
  • Analysis of psychological and physical distress caused by piracy.
  • Identification of trends and developments in piracy and maritime community efforts to respond to piracy.

BIMCO members are cordially invited to attend this event. Please contact Kellie Brandt from OBP at kbrandt@oneearthfuture.org or at +1 720 214 4419 with your information.
