Cargoes that liquefy – better understanding of dynamic separation and free slurry effect and how master and crew can take action

Overview

ClassNK and Rio Tinto issue important information on safe shipment of solid bulk cargoes relating to dynamic separation and resulting free slurry surface effect.

Rio Tinto and Class NK have jointly issued information providing a better understanding of the phenomena of dynamic separation and the resulting free slurry surface effect in relation to shipment of solid bulk cargoes. This phenomena leads to ship instability which is caused by cargo moisture instability.

The information also includes advice to master and crew on how to recognise the signs of this phenomena and take the necessary action required in order to ensure safety of the ship and its crew when shipping solid bulk cargoes. This is particular important in cases where cargoes have been misdeclared or declared incorrectly, the master and crew are educated to recognise these potential signs and take action as required.

Members are encouraged to refer to this information and learn about the difference between dynamic separation process and liquefaction as provided below.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
