Implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention during COVID-19

Published: 27 October 2021

BIMCO provides an update on the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) and what the International Labour Organization ( ILO) has undertaken in view of the COVID 19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the ILO proceeded with holding its fourth meeting of the Special Tripartite Committee of the MLC (STC). It was held online from 19-23 April 2021. At this meeting, resolutions were adopted pertaining to the implementation and practical application of the MLC, 2006 during this pandemic situation as well as COVID-19 vaccination for seafarers. There were, however, no formal amendments made to the MLC convention at this first part of the STC meeting. The second part has been tentatively planned, subject to approval by the Governing Body, to be held at the ILO's headquarters in Geneva next year from 25 -29 April 2022.

See BIMCO's pages on the MLC, 2006 here which provide a summary with all the relevant links provided for easy access. This section has been updated to take into account of the outcome of the above STC meeting.
