This side event to the UN Ocean Conference is organised by OceanCare, Coalition Clean Baltic and Friends of the Earth Germany, with the co-sponsorship of Germany and Switzerland.
The event will present and discuss the multi-environmental benefits of noise prevention and mitigation measures from shipping including a discussion on different concepts for a protective status of sea areas. BIMCO's Head of Intergovernmental Engagement, Dr Bev Mackenzie, will participate in a panel alongside Fredrik Haag of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mattias Rust of the Swedish Ministry of Infrastructure and transports and Carlos Bravo of OceanCare.
This side event will discuss the potential of different area-based conservation tools to tackle the challenges of underwater radiated noise from shipping and from oil and gas including tools that can be implemented by different organisations such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The intended objective of the side event is to:
- Raise the issue of anthropogenic underwater noise pollution from two specific sources (shipping & oil and gas)
- Identify and discuss multi-environmental benefits of noise prevention and mitigation measures from shipping as well as by the oil & gas sector
- Give specific context to different concepts for a protective status of sea areas to introduce specific measures
The event will feature speakers from the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), Friends of the Earth Germany and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
