BIMCO's Manager, Marine Environment, Christian Bækmark Schiolborg, will be taking part in a panel debate focusing on the impact of the sulphur cap on the industry and what the different players in the shipping industry can derive from the experience for the future. The debate is at the beginning of the first day of this three-day virtual conference and runs from 08:00 to 08:45 UTC.

The IMO’s 2020 global Sulphur Cap was a hot button conference topic in 2019. However, little has been heard about the Sulphur Cap since its implementation in 2020. Now the maritime industry is now facing the next regulatory game changer with the 2030 and 2050 decarbonization targets on the horizon.

Key discussion points include:

  • Was the Sulphur Cap transition relatively smooth or were there issues on the ground?
  • What has been the actual industry experience?
  • What lessons can be derived from IMO 2020?
  • How can these lessons be applied towards achieving the next decarbonization targets?
  • What are the commercial, legal and operational risks faced and what are the different strategies that can be implemented to meet these targets?
