IMO issues guidance for delays in newbuild vessel deliveries due to COVID-19

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has released guidance for cases when COVID-19 results in unforeseen delays in the delivery of newbuild bulk carriers and oil tankers originally scheduled to be delivered before 1 July 2020. The guidance is particularly relevant to shipbuilders, equipment suppliers, shipowners, surveyors and service engineers.

IMO invites member states to use industry recommendations to facilitate trade

BIMCO, ICS and other industry partners have teamed up and presented the IMO with a list of recommendations for governments and relevant national authorities on the facilitation of maritime trade during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Safety Warranty Prevails: US Supreme Court Rules that Owners can Rely on Absolute Warranty in Frequently Used Safe Berth Clauses

BIMCO, INTERCARGO and INTERTANKO welcome the ruling by the highest court in the United States on 30 March 2020 concluding that the plain meaning of the safe-berth clause in the Athos I dispute includes an unambiguous warranty of safety.

New publication offers updated maritime security guidance for mariners operating off West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea

Industry organisations, supported by government and military organisations, have worked together to produce a new publication that will help mariners detect, deter and delay external threats to their safety. Best Management Practices to Enhance Maritime Security for Vessels & Mariners Operating Off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea (BMP WA) consolidates and enhances existing guidance for specific threats in this region.

BIMCO publishes COVID-19 guidelines for office workspaces

The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak started as a locally circulating infection associated with Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market but has since developed into the current pandemic. To assist the shoreside of the maritime industry in taking appropriate protective measures at office workplaces, BIMCO is issuing guidelines intended to help shipping companies avoid spreading of the disease at offices and office buildings.

BIMCO activates Covid-19 contingency plan – all services still available

The Danish Government is taking new measures against Covid-19. Until 27 March, all public servants in non-critical jobs have been sent home, all educational institutions, schools and day care facilities are closed, and indoor gatherings have been limited to 100 people. Furthermore, the government has urged all private companies to have as many people as possible working from home, among other things, to slow down the spread of the virus.
