IMO preparation for an initial strategy on reduction green house gasses (GHG) from ships.

Overview

BIMCO participated in the second workshop at IMO for the preparation of the initial strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships last week in London.

The Intersessional Working Group on Reductions of GHG emissions from ships met for its second meeting 23 to 27 October 2017 for the continuation of the work that was initiated by MEPC 70 in 2016. While the first meeting of the group established trust and the basis for discussions during MEPC 71, this prime task was to develop draft text to the initial IMO GHG strategy, with the view for its finalization in the following third session of the groups work in April 2018. The initial IMO GHG Strategy will be approved at MEPC 72 in April 2017.

The group discussed the vision for the strategy as well as the levels of ambition and the guiding principles without coming to any agreed text proposals. But the group narrowed the different options down to a few differentiated draft text proposals, in what is called squared brackets text. The final text consideration on the draft proposal is intended to be finalized at the next and third session.

The outcome of the meeting was at the expected level, baring in mind it’s a very difficult process that have to bridge different nations views on the very complex climate issue. The work is in progress and will be ready for approval in April 2018.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
