Recorded webinar - Safety in enclosed spaces aboard ships

Published: 20 October 2022

Enclosed space incidents have been a major cause of fatalities on board ships. While we are aware of the risks involved in enclosed space to a large extent, there are still some aspects that need our better understanding.

One such aspect is the rate at which oxygen depletes in enclosed spaces. While it is largely acknowledged that oxygen depletes in enclosed spaces, its rate of depletion may not be well understood.

This BIMCO webinar focused on this aspect of enclosed spaces, while also giving an introduction into BIMCO’s work on this topic.

Hosted by Ashok Srinivasan, Manager in Maritime Safety and Security, BIMCO’s guest speaker, Dr. Donal Burke, who has conducted extensive studies on oxygen depletion in enclosed spaces, spoke about his work and the dangers present in enclosed spaces.

BIMCO hopes that this will enable stakeholders such as shipowners, ship designers and HSSE managers as well ship staff to see the issue in new light and hopefully assist in putting better safeguards in place.

The webinar was held on 12 October 2022.
