P&I Clubs add their support for Electronic Bills of Lading Campaign

Published: 10 May 2023

Support for BIMCO’s 25 by 25 Campaign to accelerate the adoption of electronic bills of lading in the bulk sector has received a boost from three leading P&I Clubs. We are delighted that the UK Club, the West and the NorthStandard have all added their backing to the initiative. BIMCO looks forward to welcoming the support of other P&I Clubs soon.

Encouraging the wider adoption of eBLs in the bulk sector will help reduce the industry’s reliance on using Letters of Indemnity as an assurance against the possible consequences of delivering a cargo without presentation of the original bill of lading. It’s a practice that has become universal in bulk shipping, but one that few would be sad to see decline.

While many might feel that the decision to use eBLs is a purely commercial matter, P&I Clubs have an important role to play. The Clubs are the “gatekeepers” for the current 10 eBL solution providers approved by the International Group of P&I Clubs. By endorsing these eBL solutions ,the Clubs can provide valuable support to encourage their members to use the platforms to help reduce their exposure to the legal and commercial risks that using LOI’s for cargo creates. If a carrier delivers a cargo without presentation of the original bill of lading, they immediately place themselves outside P&I Club cover. An electronic bill of lading can help reduce this risk by arriving at the discharge port on time.
