Maritime Labour Convention – what are the latest amendments adopted in 2022?

With the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic that started in 2020, it has inevitably brought about all possible delays and impacted every sector of the shipping industry. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise as the Maritime Labour Convention’s amendments were timely to take into account the experiences which the shipping industry has had in particular with seafarers. BIMCO sees this as a major step to improving the protection of seafarers especially for cases where they have been abandoned or are in need of medical assistance or basic entitlement to internet access on board ships as well at ports.
The amendments and resolutions agreed and adopted respectively were the outcome of the hybrid meeting of the International Labour Organization's (ILO) Special Tripartite Committee of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC 2006) that took place from 5 to 13 May 2022.
The amendments and resolutions agreed include improvement of the financial security system for abandoned seafarers and addressing contractual redress for them as well as providing seafarers with appropriate social connectivity like internet access by shipowners and government authorities on board ships and at ports.
