Overview

The training program has been specifically tailored to meet the needs of individuals who require an understanding of the maritime industry within a condensed two-day timeframe. It is designed especially for professionals in the public and political sectors. Still, it will be suitable for a wide range of professionals with a vested interest in learning more about the maritime and shipping sector.

The programme has been developed jointly by the Antwerp Maritime Academy, The Belgian Shipowners Association, and BIMCO. Each organisation contributed unique skills to enhance the program's quality and relevance.

The programme is practical in scope, with a visit to the Port of Antwerp and presentations on contemporary topics like global regulations affecting shipping and their commercial strategies, sustainability efforts in shipping, and an overview of shipping as a critical infrastructure component in global trade.

What will you learn?

Day 1: The Structure of the Maritime Industry.

The first day starts with an essential exploration of collaboration in the maritime industry. We will cover the roles of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the vital collaborations between a range of diverse stakeholders and political interests. Learn about a wide range of cost-efficiency strategies applied by the maritime industry and how shipowners are working to make operations more effective through ship and crew management entities.

Dive deeper into the industry's commercial aspects, understanding vessel types, international trading patterns, and various roles of different vessels. We will cover the complexities of maritime activities in the energy and offshore sectors and gain insights into the critical aspects of shortsea shipping and specialised carriers moving, e.g., cars or project cargoes requiring lifting heavy pieces of equipment weighing many hundred tons.

The day concludes with a thorough examination of international regulations, covering key maritime conventions like SOLAS, STCW, UNCLOS, and MARPOL. Understand the environmental protection initiatives, seafarers' rights, and welfare standards that shape the industry. We will examine how the maritime industry works with sustainability, focusing on decarbonisation, the importance of new fuel types, and how new propulsion systems aim to revolutionise maritime transportation. Explore how the transformation of the regulatory landscape aims to promote sustainability through collaboration with the maritime industry and its stakeholders.

Day 2: The Commercial Aspects of Ship Operation and Infrastructure of Shipping

Day two is focused on the commercial aspects of ship operations, chartering, and maritime economics. Throughout the day, the program covers the nuances of chartering, market trends, and the impact of economic factors on business decisions. Explore how risk management strategies and the effects of market volatility impact global environmental considerations.

Transitioning into the vital area of port operations, the programme explores vessel handling, cargo management and how international IMO conventions ensure safety both in port and at sea. Discover the role of technology, data analytics, and automation in optimising port operations, paving the way for a future where efficiency and innovation go hand in hand.

As a particular highlight, embark on a guided tour of the Port of Antwerp. Witness theory turning into practice as you step aboard a vessel, gaining firsthand insights into international maritime operations.
